One of my favorite horror movies (even though I don't find it particularly scary anymore) is Candyman, and I have posted about it before. I think of the movie as a love story now, or you could look at is as a story about a woman who gets revenge on her cheating man. Anyway, I watched the movie again recently, and I really like the song "Floating Candyman". All of the songs were done by the amazing Philip Glass, of course. I would post the image of the painting of Helen at the end of the movie if I could find it.
I thought this was interesting ...

Slumdog Millionaire is doing great business in the U.S. (where it has risen to the top place again), and in other countries. Here is a good article from that I got from Box Office Mojo about the movie's continuous success ...
http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=2556&p=.htm
Here are a couple of paragraphs from the article ...
Slumdog Millionaire climbed to the top of the foreign box office over the weekend, grossing $16 million from 34 markets (three smaller markets remain unreported) for a $96.5 million total. The Best Picture winner rose 85 percent from the previous weekend, and its biggest single country increase was in Italy (up 556 percent). In the United Kingdom, it regained the lead with a seven percent boost, and it saw sizable bumps in Australia (53 percent to second place), France (61 percent) and Spain (73 percent), where it was No. 1 ahead of The Pink Panther 2's opening. In India, where Slumdog hasn't performed as well as recent local titles Delhi 6 or Chandni Chowk to China, it grew by 470 percent, pushing its total there to $6.3 million.
Slumdog was victorious in its debuts as well.
It led in Hong Kong with $1 million (which was the second biggest
opening of the year) and in Croatia with $170,419 from 10 screens (the
biggest opening in the last four months), and it was second in Poland
with $715,677. Still on the horizon for Slumdog are Sweden
(March 6), Germany and South Korea (March 19), Japan (April 18), and
the picture will likely receive a China release at some point.
The soundtrack is doing amazing business, too. It has risen to #4 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart, and it is considered the "Greatest Gainer" on the chart right now. Remember, M.I.A. (who appears on 3 songs on the soundtrack) has a record label called NEET that distributed the soundtrack. NEET is a part of Interscope Records. M.I.A. is going to help Afrikan Boy and Rye Rye release albums on the record label, too.
On an entirely different note, here is "Bridges and Balloons" by Joanna Newsom just because I am listening to it right now ...
M.I.A. is briefly mentioned in the February 23, 2009 issue of TIME magazine ...
The scanned image on the right is an Oscar ballot filled out by TIME's film critic, Richard Corliss. I wanted to include it because Slumdog Millionaire is checked off several times on the ballot. However, Peter Gabriel's song from WALL-E is beating out M.I.A. and A R Rahman's song, "O ... Saya", from Slumdog Millionaire. I hope his prediction is incorrect, even though I do like the Peter Gabriel song, and I loved the movie, WALL-E.
Lily Allen has a new album, new single, and new look. I don't know a ton about her, but the lyrics of her new song, "The Fear", are pretty good. The album is called "It's Not Me, It's You", which is a very clever title.

In other news, I work at a credit union so I get to keep up with all of the political stuff that goes on with credit unions. There is a house bill and a senate bill that will help credit unions if they get passed. The bills discuss how retailers do not do enough to prevent customers' information from being stolen. Once there is a data security breach, financial institutions have to spend tons of money and time to cancel their members' cards and issue them new ones. These bills will help put that responsibility on the shoulders of retailers, thus causing them to take the security of their customers' information more seriously. You can find out more information on Senate Bill 345 and House Bill 327 here ...

The above link will take you to TCUL, Texas Credit Union League, which will help you send an email to your local congressman about your support for the bill. If you don't live in Texas, I am sure there are sites for credit union leagues in other states out there. Google it!

The 81st Oscar Nominations came out recently, and Slumdog Millionaire has at least 10 of them ...
Two songs from the film are also nominated for best song ...
Here are the two songs that are nominated ...
"O Saya"
"Jai Ho"
The soundtrack of "Slumdog Millionaire", which features 3 M.I.A. songs (one that A R Rahman did with her, of course) has risen to #16 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart. I think that is pretty amazing.
The soundtrack has also risen to #5 on Amazon's MP3 Downloads chart and to #6 (I think it has actually beeen #1 at one time) on iTunes top albums chart ...
Meanwhile, the movie continues to make more and more money. It only cost $15 million to make, but the movie has grossed 4 times that number ...
Here is one of my favorite songs from the soundtrack that I have not posted before ...
"Liquid Dance"
In other news, here is the funniest scene ever from "Saved By The Bell" ...
Yes, I know, that last video is totally random, but it is fun to make of.
I was watching the following trailer for "Slumdog Millionaire" ...
and at 52 seconds, I heard this woman's voice singing, and it sounded like M.I.A. to me, but it turned out to be a song called "Great DJ" by The Tings Tings. Here is the video for the song ...

In other news, I really like the song, "Say You Will", by Kanye West from his 808s & Heartbreak album. It reminds me a lot of "Venus" by Air. I love the minimalist vibe to it. I also think the song has some really good lines like "I wish this song would really come true".

Ringa Ringa is on the soundtrack to "Slumdog Millionaire". The song is by A R Rahman, Ila Arun, and Alka Yagnik. I the sound sounds pretty cool. I made a little video for it (I think I went overboard with the transitions) ...
I couldn't get the quality right, though, so it came out blurry again. Damn!
M.I.A. contributed some vocals to this song, "O ... Saya", from the movie, Slumdog Millionaire (see how much money it has made so far here), which is still not showing in Austin. I am going to see it as soon as it shows up in a theater here. It shouldn't be too long.
This "O ... Saya" song is wonderful. I know it has a lot of elements of traditional and current Indian music in it, but it also reminds me of the music Vangelis did for "Blade Runner". M.I.A.'s voice goes perfectly with it. It kind of makes me think of M.I.A.'s music from the future or something weird like that.
Here is the song on YouTube ...
You can buy the song on iTunes if you like. I hope it will be available on Amazon's MP3 Downloads section soon because I hate buying stuff from iTunes.
In other news, the mixtape, "Top Ranking", by Diplo and Santogold just keeps getting better.
The album is a continuous mix so I am going to post 2 songs below, but you need to think of them as one song since there is no pause between them on the album.
I have always liked the movie, "French Kiss", with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. The best part of the movie to me is the scenery and the music. I recently bought the soundtrack, and I decided I would post my favorite songs from the album. The images that I attached to the songs are from Jean-Michel Berts who takes amazing photographs of Paris and lots of other places. His website is here ...

The Smashing Pumpkins wrote a song for the awful, horrible movie, "Batman and Robin", called "The Beginning is the End is the Beginning". Well, it was on the movie's soundtrack. I don't know if they actually wrote it for that movie. The song is now featured in the latest trailer for "Watchmen". The trailer was shown before "The Dark Knight", and it looked really cool. The song and the visuals went really well together.
Here is the trailer ...

I really liked "The Dark Knight", and I am glad it is breaking all kinds of records. The performances were all very good, and it was nice to see a grown-up action movie. Besides seeing cool movies this weekend, I also went to a conservatory with my parents in Shreveport, Louisiana. I need to be able to go to a conservatory everyday. It was very cool.
